Andrew Joseph James, born on Armistice Day, November 11, 1928 passed away peacefully at his Hyde Park home on Wednesday, January 28, 2026 at the age of 97. Born in Saint Louis,Missouri, to Ada (Foster) and William James who, with baby Andrew swaddled in diapers, moved their young family from St. Louis to Chicago Illinois, to provide their children with greater economic and educational opportunity. Andrew was the beloved brother of siblings Genevieve, Bernard, William, David, Doris, Mary Ann, John, Julia and George, and was the proud and generous uncle of more than 70 nieces and nephews. Andrew was also the family raconteur, entrepreneur and historian. He shared many stories about his life’s travels, days in the U.S. Army, his close friend and long-time companion, Betty Schneider, and the rich and colorful lives of his parents and nine brothers and sisters, all of whom preceded him in death. All who knew and loved him remember his vibrant personality and captivating tales edged with a wry and sardonic sense of humor.
